Martins Beach
Martins Beach has been on my list of local places I should have been to already. Not sure how I haven't, with all it's controversy. I hadn't caught wind until this last year. I've been meaning to drive out for a while, and now I have. For my company's birthday, ALCHEMYcreative, we took the day off from the studio to have some fun together. First up was bowling, a quick lunch and then headed south to Martins Beach. It sits a couple miles south of Half Moon Bay beyond a gate, which I hear is open and closed at times. Be aware that you may have to walk in from HWY 1 or drive in and pay a $10 parking fee to what I assume is a local group running the ringer. Sort of a weird operation. I think I got swindled.
Either way, it's a beautiful small beach surrounded by a small community of sorts. The obvious draw is the rock structure just off shore. It's covered with all sorts of sea birds and looks to be accessible at low tide. There were a ton of pelicans flying about. I quickly became obsessed with trying to photograph them. It's the most I've seen in one place among other seabirds. I stood in the water with my Fuji Xpro-2 attached to my eye, paired with the 100-400mm Fuji lens which had me transfixed and on my toes trying to capture these birds in flight. So fun and a success!
The little community down by the beach here is interesting. A group of unique dwellings well worn by the coastal weather. It's a nice little spot I'll be coming back to when the weather is better and at Sunset for some long exposure opportunities. Until next time.
