Year End Road Trip 2014: Part 1

2,172 miles, 6 States, 5 days, and a Pentax 645z

Just to start, this is a repost from my Storehouse account from back in 2014 which has all been made private months back.  I enjoy sharing my experiences so figured I'd bring them back.

Pentax 645z fresh out of the box.

Finally, time to hit the road

I've been looking forward to this for some time now. Every year I take the last two weeks off work to decompress and replenish the creative bucket. It's tough to be creative on demand all the time. Throughout the year you have your ups and downs. It's important to find a creative outlet for yourself to achieve a balance between your personal and professional work.

This year I decided a road trip to close out the year would be the ticket to clearing my head and finding insporation. It's something I've wanted to do for a while now. I really like the idea of exploring old parts of the country and meeting unique individuals along the way. So I hit the road with no clear direction except knowing I didn't want to drive the same road twice and to document my journey. I had some new camera gear, a medium format Pentax 645z, to battle test and some film to shoot. Sounds fun, no?

Journal Entry 12/19/14

6:29pm - "Finally packed up and ready to head out. I have far more stuff than I need but should be prepared for anything. Off to Sacramento to look at a camera I've had my eye on the last couple of months on Craigslist."

7:13pm - "Stopped at Treasure Island. Fog at interesting level. Testing the 645z in low light."

11:42pm - "Well, what can I say? I went to Sacramento for a Leica M6 and came out with that, a Polaroid SX-70, a Polaroid 250, and a Rolleiflex 2.8f. Oh, and not to mention a freezer bag full of film. Not a bad way to start a roadtrip!"

I left Sacramento and decided to stay on HWY 80 through Truckee headed toward Reno. It started snowing really hard but I was able to make it over the pass without a problem.

Really stoked to finally have started this trip. Can't wait to see what I find along the way. To be continued...

Photo. Video. Adventure. Let's go outside.
